+ Why practice SKY Breathing Meditation?

SKY is a unique practice that is easy and very effective at quickly settling your mind into deep meditation without thinking. The deeper the mind settles in meditation the greater the benefits. Deep meditation is the key to keeping the mind fresh, clear and resilient.

SKY takes only 10 minutes. Additional practices taught on the workshop can be added to your routine to lengthen your time in meditation and increase the benefits. Spending 20 to 40 minutes per day on practices is recommended. You will feel the difference. Certain techniques taught on the workshop can be used as needed when you want a quick energy boost or you need help in sleeping.

To live your full potential you need to remove the accumulated stress and negative emotions that keep the mind busy and tense. The unique rhythms of breathing in SKY profoundly cleanse the system of stress even more than a meditation experience alone.

+ Is SKY the same as yoga breathing (pranayama)?

SKY practice is completely different from the breathing practices (often called pranayama) used in yoga studios. Many types of breathing practices are helpful to calm the mind but SKY practice settles the mind to the deepest, silent state of pure awareness.

Deep meditation is a natural state but the busy mind resists quieting down so some skill is needed to fully settle the mind. SKY rejuvenates and heals you much more than just relaxation or watching thoughts. SKY makes deep meditation simple, easy and consistently more effective.

If you already meditate you can add 10 minutes of SKY practice first and your meditation will become consistently deeper and benefits will expand.

+ How long before I can meditate deeply?

Most people experience deep meditation the very first time they do SKY. In the first week most people begin to notice changes in how they feel or friends comment on how much more relaxed they are. The benefits are cumulative: inner peace, a more open heart, greater resiliency and better health grow stronger and stronger every day. Everyone can do it.

+ Deep Meditation vs. Mindfulness Practice

The difference between deep meditation and mindfulness practice is the use of mental effort and the resulting experience. Deep meditation happens when you let go of effort, in mindfulness practice you use effort to pay attention to thoughts continuously. In mindfulness practice you keep reminding yourself to observe and to stop judging and this keeps you in a state of alert thinking, the waking state of consciousness.

SKY brings deep meditation, spontaneously settling the mind into a different state of consciousness where thoughts effortlessly quiet down and you have moments of total stillness. This stillness is not the sleep state. Sleep is unconscious rest and deep meditation is conscious rest. The quality of being more aware and mindful is a spontaneous result of deep meditation. You don't "try" to be aware, you simply are more aware and live it naturally.

+ Are there evidence-based benefits?

There are over 65 published studies on SKY, many in peer-reviewed journals, showing a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional benefits. Many benefits are seen immediately from SKY. A study on veterans with PTSD found the significant benefits they gained from doing SKY for one week were still present one year later even among those who didn't continue practicing at home.

+ How do I learn SKY? What does it cost?

Take a live, 4 session workshop to learn SKY. The program is offered nationwide. Training is immersion style so you master the practice in a few days. Classes are held 4 hours on Saturday and Sunday, 3 hours on Monday evening, and a final session later in the week. All sessions are necessary. Email, text or call us to find and register for a workshop.

The workshop fee is $395 or $295 for students. Grants and scholarships can be applied for. We are a nonprofit organization and our goal is to make SKY practice available to everyone. You can speak to local instructors regarding partial scholarships for financial need.

+ Where does SKY come from?

SKY stands for Sudarshan Kriya®, part of an ancient science of practices for personal development, expanding awareness and better health. SKY has been taught all over the world by certified instructors for over 30 years. The SKY Breathing Meditation program was designed by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a global humanitarian who has taught millions of people in 152 countries. SKY is taught through the nonprofit International Association for Human Values.
