SKY Breathing Meditation Significantly Increases Emotional Regulation

fMRI data supporting emotional regulation. These preliminary findings suggest that SKY Breathing Meditation offers faster recovery (“resilience”) of corto-limbic networks after affective stimulation. Further studies may examine how such connectivity changes relate to emotional experience.

Respiratory feedback in the generation of emotion

Emotions have been documented to change breathing patterns and breathing patterns have been documented to change emotions. Controlled patterns of breathing thus can serve as powerful tools to impact and shift emotional states.

SKY Significantly Improves Mental Focus

Stacks Image 29

EEG changes were recorded in 19 SKY practitioners outside the practice of SKY and compared with the EEG patterns of 16 controls (doctors and medical researchers who did not practice SKY, yoga or meditation). Significant increases in beta activity were observed in the left frontal, parieto-occipital and midline regions of the brain in the SKY practitioners, as compared to controls.

These results are interpreted by neurologists as indicative of increased mental focus/heightened awareness. It is striking to note that SKY practitioners displayed significantly greater mental alertness (beta activity) than the control group of physicians and medical researchers, whose profession requires development and daily use of these very skills.

SKY Breathing Meditation Significantly Enhances antioxidant defense mechanisms

Stacks Image 52

Significant elevations in glutathione levels before starting the SKY session indicates baseline antioxidant levels remain high as a function of daily SKY breathing program. The controls did not show a significant change. Similar findings were obtained for antioxidant defense enzymes: catalase and SOD. Each experiment was done in duplicate.

Two 4 day pilot programs for faculty wellness utilizing SKY Breathing Meditation and its accompanying practices were conducted at the MD Anderson Cancer Institute by the Office of Academic and Faculty Development.

Data from this preliminary trial strongly supports the use of the SKY Breathing Meditation program for personal resiliency. A multi-centered pilot program for the Advanced Physician Wellness curriculum which employs this component is ideal to obtain further data.

SKY Breathing Meditation Significantly Reduced Clinical Anxiety and Major Depression following inadequate response to antidepressants

Summary: In a randomized, controlled pilot study, SKY Breathing Meditation helped alleviate severe depression in medicated patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) who did not fully respond to antidepressant treatments, compared to medicated patients who did not partake.

Both SKY Breathing Meditation and Effortless Deep Meditation technique may hold distinct advantages over Mindfulness-based interventions in the reduction of anxiety

The APW techniques utilize the innate tendencies of body and mind to promote optimal physical and mental wellness without requiring mental effort or vigilant attention, which are difficult for a hyper-stimulated mind.

This difference in procedures may account for APW’s techniques producing robust effects on such outcomes as hypertension, and clinical anxiety and depression; while meta-analyses suggest no effects for MBSR on these outcomes.

Meta-analytic reviews of research on mindfulness indicate that its impact on anxiety is often low, ambiguous, or equivalent to a control intervention (Goyal et al., 2014; Toneatto & Nguyen, 2007).

Sitting silently in meditation – as in traditional mindfulness practices – may be challenging for anxious people with high degrees of physiological arousal. A breathing practice may be easier and preferable because it engages the participant in a structured, yet nearly effortless activity that leads to immediately observable calming effects (Brown & Gerbarg, 2005b).

Given that changes in respiration can alter emotional states (Boiten et al., 1994; Philippot et al., 2002), manipulation of the breath may offer control over anxiety, further underscoring the applicability of respiration-based interventions for anxious populations (Arch & Craske, 2006; Asmundson & Stein, 1994; Kaushik et al., 2006; Salkovskis et al., 1986).
